Main Aims

  • Develop Reading Comprehension Skills: Help students practice identifying the main idea in a text and distinguishing supporting details, which is essential for understanding and summarizing information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Encourage Critical Thinking: Guide students in deciding whether each sentence is related to the main idea, which enhances their ability to evaluate information and think critically about text organization.
  • Build Vocabulary and Sentence Comprehension: By sorting sentences and discussing their relevance to the main idea, students will reinforce their understanding of vocabulary in context and improve sentence-level comprehension.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ice-breaking with a brief introduction of myself and check student prior experience in using Kahoot!.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Check student's prior knowledge about main idea and details by showing a good and bad example of main idea. Student need to read through and text and respond with emoji reactions.

Clarification/Teaching (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and check understanding

Students will be answering multiple questions regarding main idea and details with visual aid support. Immediate feedback will be given by the teacher after every question to check their understanding.

Controlled Practice (7-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Divide students into 4 groups. Teacher hand out a mix of sentences (some main ideas and some supporting details) to students. In groups, students decide which sentence is the main idea and which ones are details. Then, ask them share their sorting choices with the class.

Closure and feedback (2-3 minutes) • To check what they have learned from the lesson

Reviewing the key points of the lesson by asking ICQs and provide feedback to students' production.
