Main Aims

  • To enable students to use the simple past tense with regular verbs confidently. To practice speaking and listening skills through the context of travel experiences.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To expand students' vocabulary related to daily routines, travel, and common verbs.

Procedure

Warm-up (10 minutes) • To activate prior knowledge and set context

Greet students and ask questions about their weekend activities. Encourage them to use past simple, gently correcting errors as needed.

Introduction (5 minutes) • To introduce the topic and goals of the lesson

Briefly introduce the theme (e.g., 'My first day in Vietnam') and explain that the focus will be on talking about past experiences.

Presentation (20 minutes) • To present past simple (regular verbs)

Use the 'My first day in Vietnam' comic strip to show sentences in the past simple. Elicit the past forms and write them on the board, emphasizing pronunciation.

Practice (20 minutes) • To practice forming and pronouncing past simple verbs

Distribute worksheets with fill-in-the-blanks and matching exercises (e.g., 'My mother ___ at the airport' -> 'cried'). Monitor and provide feedback.

Listening (15 minutes) • To practice listening skills in the past tense

Play an audio story of the character’s experiences in Vietnam. Students listen for past simple verbs, then check answers in pairs.

Speaking (15 minutes) • To encourage fluency with past simple in conversation

Pair students to discuss their own 'first day' experiences, using prompts if necessary (e.g., 'Where did you go?', 'What did you feel?'). Rotate to ensure all students practice speaking.

Vocabulary Review (10 minutes) • To reinforce common past verbs related to travel

Review the key vocabulary from the lesson (e.g., greet, start, learn). Students match vocabulary with images or situations, reinforcing meaning and usage.

Feedback (10 minutes) • To address errors and clarify any misunderstandings

Provide feedback on common mistakes noted during practice stages, focusing on form and pronunciation.

Wrap-up (5 minutes) • To consolidate learning and check understanding

Recap the lesson’s main points. Give students a brief summary of the lesson’s target language and thank them for their participation.
