Grammar, Speaking
Pre-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will focus on the grammar points "for", "since", "been in" and "been to" in Present Perfect Tense. I will use guided discovery method. First, they will be exposed to the TL through the timeline I will draw on the board. Then I will teach/present them the differences between "been to" and "been in". Then they will do a controlled writing practice in which they will combine what they know and what they have learnt in this lesson in order to feel comfortable about the TL. After this, they will do a semi-controlled speaking/conversation activity using all the items they have practiced.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of present perfect tense in the context of travel.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of travel.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I start with a conversation with the class, asking them questions in present perfect tense, relating it with Murat's lesson.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Eliciting or guiding them to "for" and "since" with the help of the timeline I draw on the board, I ask them to write down two sentences each, one with "for", one with "since" in the contexts of travelling, habits, hobbies or business which are related to personal information. Then I ask six or seven students to write the time phrases they used on the columns of "for-since" I prepare on the board. ("six years" goes to "for" column, "1999" goes to "since" column for example.)

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I highlight the TL on the board. I drill for pronunciation if necessary. I let them correct mistakes if there are any.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

After highlighting the TL, I make sure that they understand the meaning using CCQs like; Does "since" show a point of time in the past? Do we use "for" to talk about a period of time? Do they have the same meaning? Does "been to" mean I went and came back? Does "been in" mean I am here or not? After this, I elicit the form from them to help them see where these words go in the sentence and where else they can be. At the end I drill for pronunciation if necessary.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

To make sure that they have understood, I give them a controlled practice where they will identify the tense and meaning of the verbs of the sentences in the handout 1. In the feedback, I will let them discuss in pairs if they got it right. If there are people who don't have answers, I will let some strong students to stand up and tell the class the answers he got and let the others to agree or disagree. In order to prevent fuss, I will let only one student speak at a time.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free-practice

In this activity, I will model the activity to show them how they will do it and then they will write true sentences about themselves using the accurate tense and form with the help of handout 2 and they will check answers in pairs. I will choose one student to read his/her answer and then s/he will choose the next student who will read.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In the last activity, they will do a semi-controlled speaking practice using the parameters in handout 3 I will give them. First they will write down some place names and then they will mingle in the class or face each other with different people and have a conversation about where they have (never) been to recently, where they haven't been to for/since .... etc.
