Description

In this lesson, students will learn to talk about art, music and literature through reading and vocabulary activities.

Materials

Abc Empower Student's Book (Pre-Intermediate Level-B1), Teacher's PPT, Handout

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about art and culture in the context of the most iconic books, music, art and buildings of all time

Subsidiary Aims

  • To improve students' knowledge of vocabulary about art and culture

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students and also activate their prior knowledge especially focusing on vocabulary about art

Show SS the PPT about some famous Turkish artists, photographers, dancers .. etc. to elicit the topic and also some words which SS may have difficulty with.

Pre-Reading/Listening (2-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Let ss match pictures and words on Page 78(Vocabulary 1a) and let them ask and answer the question on exercise 1c as a pair work activity

While-Reading 1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide ss less challenging detailed reading tasks

Ask the ss the questions from exercise 2a as a whole-class activity, and give them time to read the paragraphs individually and silently. After that, let them do the exercise 2b individually and later check the answers together as a whole-class activity.

While-Reading - 2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

For more detailed reading, let the ss read the paragraphs for the second time and give them time to answer the T-F questions in exercise 2c. Give them time to check their answers with their partners and later provide the answers to the ss. Let the ss ask and answer the question from exercise 2e to each other.

Post-Reading (7-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned through a speaking activity

Give the ss the handouts which contain completing the sentences activity from exercise 4a on Page 79, give them time to complete them. When they finish completing the sentences, ask them to say the questions for each sentence and let them stand up, find a partner or partners and allow them to ask and answer the questions and completed sentences.
