Main Aims

  • To practice and and revise collocations on ambitions and dreams.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop reading for gist and speaking fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will show some pictures to students about dreams and ambitions. Ask: What are the people in the pictures doing? What were your ambitions or dreams when you were younger? Would you still like to do these things now? Were your ambitions realistic?

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Share G-form via chat. The teacher will first present the text and ask the students to skim the questions. Students will then skim the text and answer the questions individually. They have to select the correct person based on the statement. At the end of 3 minutes students have to submit their answers. We are going to check the answers using the reponse tool through OCFB. Answers: 1. a, 2. b, 3. b, 4. a, 5. b

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning The teacher will send the G-form and present the activity. Students will have to match the definition with the correct collocation. Students will be given 2 minutes to complete the activity. Then we will use the response tool to check any difficulties in OCFB. Ask CCQs about round the world, start my own business, buying a house or flat, and learn how to drive. Answers: 1. b, 2. a, 3. a, 4. b Form The teacher will present the collocations in a G-slide. Students have to match each part of speech with each word of the collocation. Teacher and students will work together in this activity. Answers: 1. Learn how to drive (v) (adv) (infinitive) 2. Go round the world (v) (preposition) (noun phrase) 3. Buy a house or flat (v) (noun phrase) (conjunction) (noun) Pronunciation The teacher will show the slide to the students. Students will listen to the collocations twice. Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The teacher will present the activity to the students and provide an example. She will then send the G-form activity in the chat. The students have to choose a verb that belongs with all the words in each group. Students will do this individually and then we will check in OCFB. Answers: 1. buy, 2. become, 3. learn, 4. go, 5. write, 6. make, 7. have, 8. earn

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will be assigned to breakout rooms. They will be asked to discuss with their partner about different types of ambitions: 1. Things that most people do. 2. Things that very few people do. 3. Things that you think are easy / difficult to do. Students have to use the some of the following collocations when speaking to their partner: learn how to drive, become famous, earn $1 million, start your own business, go round the world, get married, buy a house or flat, appear on television, go to university, write a novel, go abroad, have children. After 5 minutes students will change of partners. Note examples of good use of collocations. OCFB on content and language.
