Procedure (29-41 minutes)
The teacher will have the words "successful business" on the board with the question. What qualities does a person need to make a successful business? If students don't understand the word "qualities" then the teacher will describe qualities of them self, or of a student. Allow time for the students to discuss in pairs and come up with qualities, then the teacher will brainstorm and write their ideas on the board. Hopefully students will mention these 3 qualities, "passionate" "excited" and "ambitious". If they don't then the teacher should. Then students will read a very short paragraph about "connections". Then answer the question about the short paragraph.
Students will then listen to an investor conducting an interview with an entrepreneur. Whilst they are listening to this task. As they are listening to the interview, on the board there will be a picture of the two people in the interview. At the end of the audio the teacher will ask students which one they think is the investor and which one they think is the entrepreneur. If they seem confused by these words, convey the meaning of these words by example.
Ask students what the entrepreneur has proposed to the investor and weather they think its a good idea or not. Then on the board the teacher will have a picture of then entrepreneurs idea with words of different parts of the invention above the picture. The students in pairs will need to label the picture with the words. One by one students will come up to the board and write the word in its appropriate place in the picture in order to get FB.
Ask students to answer question 4a and then check FB from the students to make sure they have understood. Then draw their attention to the 8 highlighted words. Go through some basic pronunciation with the students and ask students to notice the stress on each word. Then do some drilling with the students. After the teacher is confident that the SS have the words firmly in their heads, the teacher will put on the board the words with definitions jumbled up next to them. The SS in pairs will need to match the correct word with its definition. When they have finished get FB from the students.
The students should be able to differentiate each word between a noun or an adjective. Allow the students a few minutes in pairs to decide which each word is. Then take FB and write their ideas on the board
Students will now imagine they are entrepreneurs and create their own business idea or invention. In pairs to start with they will decide and think how much money their idea will need. Then once they have finished the teacher will regroup the students into pairs. Now they take it in turns, one student will be the entrepreneur whilst the other is the investor. The investor will conduct an interview using the vocabulary learnt in the lesson. Then they will switch once they have finished.
