Description

In this lesson the students will learn about an article on a website talking about a wild elephant. On the website there is a photo club competition and the winner of the competition is Aluna Tuju from Kenya. Aluna tells a web reporter Dee Weston about her favorite animal.

Main Aims

  • The main aim of this lesson is reading about an article talking about an elephant on a website.

Subsidiary Aims

  • The subsidiary aim in this lesson is speaking about one wild animal and giving information about it.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set the context and engage the students.

Introduce myself. Hello everyone my name is Mays. Ask Ss to stand up in a circle to introduce their names. I throw a ball at someone and he/she says her name till everyone has said their names. Jumble few words on wb and ask students to unjumble them. e.g. lion, tiger, gorilla. Put Ss into small groups and give them a puzzle to do. Take w/c fb. Write the answers on board. Hamster, rabbit, cat, parrot, tortoise, and goldfish. what's the cue word: elephant. Show a picture of an elephant stick it on wb.

Pre-teach vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • To raise students' aware of some vocabulary words they will see in a reading text.

5 words to be teaching: wild, reporter, wave, river. dangerous. Eliciting here. Point at the animals that are there on board already (hamster, rabbit, cat, parrot, goldfish, and tortoise) Can we keep them at home? Are they friendly? Why yes, because they are pets. Where do they live? At home. On farm. How about elephants, tigers, lions? Are they friendly? Can we keep them? Why not? They are wild. Where do they live. In forests. Explain river. What do elephant drink? water. From? Sea? River? Show a picture of a river. wave, to demonstrated movement. web reporter, to give each student a role to take a picture of one hidden animal. After everyone has taken a picture I show the picture and indicate that the winner is the elephant photographer. I am the web reporter, the one who announces the winner.

Reading (10-12 minutes) • To expose students to authentic materials..and to expose students to authentic materials

Draw on board a girl naming her Dee. Dee is the reporter. Aluna is the photographer. In groups of three Ss order the questions with answers between Dee and Aluna. Give handout 2.Quest student book page 34. Match the questions to answers. Questions are in green. Answers are in blue so Ss can differentiate between the questions and answers. Take w/c fb. Put the answers on board.

Post-reading (2-3 minutes) • To check understanding

To check understanding, teacher reads out few questions from World quest Student Book page 34. Ex. 3 Draw on board. Aluna sees her elephant near................. The elephant's name is .................... The elephant is ................. years old. Aluna says wild elephants are very .............. Aluna takes photos with her ................. camera.

Pre-Speaking (5-6 minutes) • To develop the skill of starting a conversation

On board demonstrate the instructions. Give out a blank sheet. Choose you wild animal. Lion, elephant, or tiger. Draw your favorite animals and give information as on board.

Speaking (8-10 minutes) • By the end of the lesson students will be able to talk about their favorite animal picture

In groups students tell about their favorite animal.
