Description

In this lesson, I am going to expose them to a quotation from Oscar Wilde to dispel a disbelief. Then they are learned how to use a paper dictionary. Next, some pieces of the reading are given to them after arranging them in their homogeneous groups. After asking questions and shedding light on the language, they are going to think out of the box and come up with the tips using for online dictionary.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about how to use a dictionary in the context of dictionary

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of online dictionaries
  • To provide product writing practice of a item writing in the context of tips for how to use online dictionaries

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Greet 2. Write the quotation on the board "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken" 3. Discuss the meaning

Pre-Reading (15-16 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1. Arrange their seats into a circle shape 2. distribute the pages of dictionaries 3. Explain the Pronunciation guide 4. Explain the Introduction and the names of each section 5. Teach some of the words of the reading like abbreviation and collocation 6. Ask what the introduction part contains 7. Write their answers on the board 8. Say that such information is offered in the Introduction 9. Illicit the meaning of the word offer and teach it 10. Ask if anyone know how to use a paper dictionary 11. If they want, ask them to explain it. if not, do it yourself. 12. Choose a word and find it in the pages of the dictionary given to Ss 13. Explain each step for finding the word and find the paper having the word 14. Teach the phrase of guide words 15. Ask if looking up in paper dictionaries is interesting or hard 16. Collect the papers and their schoolbooks 17. Teach three key words: CCQs: 1) It is .......... to know how to use a dictionary. Essential a) Is it important? (Yes) b) Very or a little important? (very important) 2) I am going to the bookstore. There are so many books to buy: scientific, novels, fiction, non-fiction, etc. Which one is my favorite? I should ........ my needs. Identify a) Should I know my needs? (yes) b) very well? (yes) 3) I missed the bus. ........... , I arrived at the school late. Therefore a) Why did I arrive at school late? (because I missed the bus)

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1. Arrange them to 9-10 triads and quartets 2. distribute the pieces 3. Ask them to put them in to order ICQs: Should you write anything or match? (match) How many minutes? (2-3 mins)

Relaxation (2-3 minutes) • To take a break

1. Set aside two minutes for resting ICQs: How many minutes? (2 mins)

While-Reading#2 (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

1. Return the books 2.Ask Qs: How many types of dictionaries are there? What section does give information about entries? What are the two words at the top of each page of the dictionary? 3. Ask to find the word synonym to hard 4. Ask to say the meaning of issue and tips in the text 5.Explain the word expand on the board by drawing a circle some words in it and a larger circle with more words 6. Illicit the word

Post-Reading (12-13 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1. Ask what dictionaries they use more, paper or online dictionaries. 2. Ask what dictionary apps they use 3. Ask them to come up with some tips for online dictionaries ICQs: How many minutes? ( about 5 mins) 4. Ask them to write their tips on the board
