In this reading ss will get acquainted with what American teenagers do during their free time . Comprehending this text will let then have fun and get some factual information related to young teenagers of the same age as they are in an English spoken country.

Main Aims

  • To develop students' reading skills reading for gist , reading for specific information and deducing meaning

Subsidiary Aims

  • To expose students to some authentic material so that they can enjoy and learn about teenagers in an English speaking environment

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T: Today I'm going to tell you about my daughter . She is about your age .Show them her photo. In pairs guess what she likes doing and tell me if she does them every day.(Set as a competition)

Pre-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text through activating schemata

T: Look at the pictures. - What do these pictures show you? Does my daughter do them every day? Which one isn't an activity.( Find the odd one out activity) Why is it there? Discuss with the person next to you. -What do you think the reading is about? Divide them into groups. T: Tell me what other activities do you like doing in your free time.

While-Reading #1 (4-6 minutes) • To read for gist

T: In your groups read the text and try to find a title for it .Is it the same as what you thought before? What is different?

While-Reading #2 (6-8 minutes) • To scan for specific information

T: Read again.How many different activities do American teenagers like doing? Can you name them?Check your answers with the hand out. Now what I would like you to do is cut them and stick them in the right place on the chart.Check your answers with other groups.

While-Reading #3 (4-6 minutes) • To deduce the meaning of lexis from context

T: This time read the text and try to find the right match for the words and expressions.Check with other groups. Now let's check together.

Post-Reading (12-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T:What do Turkish teenagers do in their free time ? What are their favorite activities ?Do they have the same free time activities that American teenagers have, or are they different?Do it in your groups ,make a poster.Stick them to the wall and one student explain to the others.
