in this lesson students are going to listen to a story about a couple who met each other through a coincidence

Materials

Abc audio file (American English File 2- Student's book)
Abc American English File 2- Student's book
Abc handout (my own)

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about funny coincidences in the context of meeting new people

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of interesting things that happened on the internet

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I tell the students a story about googling my cousin's name and finding different people with same name. the students will be asked if they have ever searched their names on the internet as well and if they did, what was the result? was there someone else with the same name as their?

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In this stage students will learn the meaning of the following words: coincidence (coincidentally) _ discover (discovery) _ confusion (confused) _ have something in common each word is showed with pictures and students try to explain the meaning of the words using the hints in the pictures

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

the students will listen to the audio file and answer the following questions: what is the coincidence? students will try to explain their reasons if they come up with different answers

While-Reading/Listening #2 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

the student will be asked to answer the questions on page 89, listening part, part b individually. they mark the sentences True or False and then the answers will be checked in the class. the students explain their reasons for each sentence and they will support their ideas if they come up with different answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

in this stage the students will talk about some interesting discoveries they had on the internet.
