Write a quote from the ABC series Merlin: " In a land of myth, in the time of magic, the destiny of a great kingdom rests on the shoulders of a young boy. His name.... Merlin." Ask them whether they know this series or not. If they don't tell them that it's about the kingdom of Camelot which mostly believed that a place in Great Britain. Ask them the meaning of land in this sentence.(try to elicit the word "country") Tell them to discuss why do we sometimes use the word 'land" instead of 'country' for one minute. At the end, if they can find the explanations, give them the HO and tell them to do exercise #1. If they cannot find, then give them the explanation first. When they finish the exercise tell them to check their answers in pairs.
Draw a diagram that includes the words " hills, field, mountains, forest, river, desert" in the inner circle and the words "rolling, high, grassy, open, dense, corn, wheat, snow-capped, dry, green, broad, rain, barren" in the outer circle. Tell them to match the words in the outer circle with the words in the inner circle to describe features of the natural world. Tell them to work in pairs. Monitor them while they are on the task. When they finish the task, get some WCFB and write some good collocations on the WB.
Tell them to circle the correct word in the sentences on the Ex. #2 to make appropriate collocations. When they are done with the exercise tell them to check their answers in pairs.
Divide sts into four groups. Tell each group to choose a country to describe the natural features of. Ask sts to prepare a short text individually to describe the natural features of the chosen country by using the natural world collocations. When they finish writing, tell them to compare their writings within the group.
Tell the groups to draw an outline of the country that they wrote about indicating the directions on it. Ask them to take turns to describe the natural features of the country while drawing on the map. Tell them that they are going to present this to the WC as a group so they need to arrange who is going to say what. When all groups are ready, give three minutes to each group for their presentation.
Tell them to write the correct words in the gaps for the ex #3. When they finish, tell them to do pair-check. Then get WCFB.
