Description

In this lesson, students practice past simple tense through pair works, mingle and whole class activities. The lesson starts with a memory activity. Then, it continues with eliciting the past tense by giving different examples. Then, there are controlled and board activities. Finally, they practice a freer speaking activity for fluency.

Main Aims

  • to provide the Ss with understanding and using the TL, past simple tense.

  • to provide speaking practice for fluency.

Procedure

Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greets the Ss. Ask some daily personal questions. Then, show some general pictures via ppt and ask questions about them. Blank the projector and by pointing out the places of pictures ask " what was/ there?" try to practice " there was/were..."

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To introduce and practice the target language

Introduce the TL by using sentences from the previous lesson. Show the grammar chart of past tense. Then, Do an exercise: circle the correct one. Pair check, WC FB.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Do board rush activity: Fill in the blanks in the chart. Focus on the form of the TL.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Controlled activity, circle the correct one in the dialogue individually. Then, PC- WCFB. Clarify the meaning and the form if necessary and practice the pronunciation. Then, practice the dialogue in pairs. Correct the mistakes as WCFB.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for freer speaking activity

do the activity are the sentences correct or incorrect? Do the activity named 'Simit'. Ask them to make an ordered sentence while saying Simit without breathing. Each group tries to complete the sentence before they breath. Give points.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In pairs talk about your last birthday by asking the questions " were you happy in your last birthday? was there a cake? were there gifts? where were you?"etc. write them on the board as examples.
