Description

In this lesson students will practice and develop their reading skills through reading for gist and reading for detail. They will do this using an interview of Ewen McGregor. This lesson will also provide them with the opportunity to learn vocabulary within the lexis of movies and theater, as well as practice forming, asking and responding to questions through interviewing.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice in the context of pop culture and entertainment through the use of an interview of Ewen Mcgregor.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice asking and answering questions through the formant of an interview within the context of cinema.
  • To provide clarification of phrases, would you like + infinitive, manage noun + noun, look for in + noun, and go for it, in the context of Interviews

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show photo collage of Ewen McGregor, Ask students, Who do you see in the photo? What is he doing? Do you like his movies? What do you think the reading will be about?

Pre-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible through a check of phares they might not have knboweldge of

Share Google Slides with Language check. Give students instructions to put correct numbers infront of the corresponding meaning. Have peers check they have the same answers. Clarify any discrepancies they have. Share examples of form and ask CCQs.

While-Reading#1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide a gist reading of the inertview through matching posed questions with Ewen's answers

Introduce the text of the interview. Explain that they will read it for gist and find the question that corresponds to each answer. In groups in BORS students will complete the worksheet. We then return to main meeting room to peer check answers clarifying disagreements.

While-Reading#2 (9-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailedand inference reading by deciding if statements about Ewen McGregor are ture or false and giving specifc reasons why

Introduce the google form to the students. Explain that they will be reading the interview again. After this reading they will decide if statements about Ewen McGregor are true or false. They will have to write the reason why they think each answer is True or false. After completing the form individually, send the students to BORS for 5 mins to compare answers and self correct. Monitor and if there are disagreements go over as a whole class.

Post-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Tell the students they will now interview their classmate about their favorite movie star, but first we will brainstorm Questions we can ask. Share slide with table giving a start to possible questions. Write in questions elicited from students, Then send to BORS for 7-8 minutes with a partner to interview each other. Next rejoin main room and have students report back on what they learned.
