To practice Ss’ listening skills by listening for gist and detailed information in the context of Living underground.

To practice Ss’ reading receptive skills as a pre-listening task in the context of Living underground.
Procedure (39-49 minutes)
After greeting, show the visuals of four different types of houses (underground, igloo, cave and tree) and ask questions: “what are they? Are they shopping centers? Are they houses?” Point out one “Is it cold or hot? Do you now its name? etc.” elicit the TL and write them on the board.
Reading: Introduce David by showing his photo. “This text is about David. Where does he live? In an underground house, an igloo, a tree house or a cave house? Now read the text. Will you write? Will you listen or read?” use your gestures to explain the task clearly. Then, pair check and WCFB.
Gist task for the 1st listening: “David lives in Coober Pedy city. Is it a hot city or cold? Now listen to David. Will you write? Will you read or listen?” use gestures! Then, pair check and WCFB. 4 Detailed task for the 1st listening: “Is it hot in an underground house or cold? Now listen to David again” use gestures! Then, pair check and WCFB.
Gist task for the 2nd listening: “David lives in this house. Is he happy or not? Now listen to David” use gestures! Then, pair check and WCFB. Detailed task for the 2nd listening: Point out the picture on page 54. “Look at the picture. There are furniture here for example fridge, bed etc. listen to David again. Tick them when David says. For example, David says fridge, tick it. Now listen to David again” use gestures! Then, pair check and WCFB.
By pointing out the pictures, “do you like them? Which one do you like? For example, I like tree house. Design (is a familiar word in Turkish) your house e.g. my house is a tree house. There are 2 rooms. There is a fridge etc.” let them think for a few minutes then pair check and start the speaking activity. “tell it to your friend.” use gestures!
