Description

In this lesson, the students are going to practice reading for main ideas, details, and specific information about two people who have never learned to drive.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about people who have never learned to drive in the context of hitch-hiking

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of travelling experiences in the context of critical situations of hitch hiking and bike riding
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of critical situations of hitch hiking and bike riding

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T. asks the students to describe the pictures of the people. He asks some questions like: How old is each person? Where do you think he/ she is from? Do you think they traveled a lot? Do they think they can drive cars?

Pre-Reading/ speaking (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T. asks students to do exercise 1 page 110. Students answer the questions about themselves then compare their answers with each other. They use' Have you ever?'. Next, T. directs the students' attention to exercise 2 on the same page. They are required to translate the words from the text. T. monitors them and gives final agreement on the meanings of the words in accordance with the context.

While-Reading (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T. divides the students into two groups. Each group will read a text about one of the personalities. Later, they will answer the questions from 1- 10. Once, they finish, the students compare their answers with other peers from the other group. T. gives them an answer key and gives feedback over some answers they might find difference.

Post-Reading/Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T. directs the students to the speaking questions on exercise no. 6 where they share their opinions about the two personalities. T. gives the students some time to prepare their ideas and take notes, then they can start speaking. T. monitors and gives prompts to help with the continuity of the speech. Later, T. gives a collective feedback over the students' verbal performance in terms of fluency and accuracy.
