In this lesson students are going to learn some verb phrases through the comprehension of the text .

Materials

Abc American english file student's book 2
Abc HO

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about difficulties in talking about ones feelings in the context of problem solving and giving advise

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of giving appropriate advise in the context of talking about problems and feelings.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-12 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students are going to answer part "a" of the reading in pairs.

Pre-Reading/Listening (13-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will teach the following verb phrases ( get advise , having second thoughts , difficult to get along with) by giving a short story and using those verb phrases.After that students are going to do a fill in the blank activity which contains a dialogue between two people, but the new verb phrases are missing and students need to chose them from a box, and then read the completed dialogue out loud.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will need to answer the following question after reading the passage for the first time. What problems are there in the reading?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students are going to do the part " b" activity in pairs. First the answers will be checked by students themselves and then by the whole class. After that they are going answer part "c" which is guessing the highlighted verb phrases.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students are going to answer the questions on part " d" in pairs.
