Description

Students will start this lesson with discussion. Followed by vocabulary exercise; matching words with meanings. Finally, there is some controlled practice and freer practice speaking and writing activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about 'The Parent Trap' in the context of family.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a discussion in the context of family.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will provide examples of what she was allowed to do when she was a child. The teacher will write the following sentences on the board. 1. I was allowed to go to the park. 2. I was not allowed to stay home by myself. The teacher will ask students why they think her parents allowed and not allowed her? What were the possible reasons?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students will go in groups of 4 and start discussing the following questions. Students will ask each other the questions. 1. When you were a child, what did your parents make you do? 2. What did they let you do?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The teacher will write the new vocabulary on the board. The teacher will start eliciting the following vocabulary. 'protect, the media, grow up, freedom and danger. The teacher asks students to repeat the words and asks if they know what they mean? Students to go in pairs and do the matching meaning exercise for the words. (HO1) Students to check their answers from the answer key.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will read the article (HO2) for gist and choose the best sentence describing the article. Then they will say why they have chosen the particular sentence. Secondly, the students will read the article again in detail for specific information and tick the true sentences and correct the false ones. (HO3) Finally, the students will check their answers from the answer key. (HO4)

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students will write about their childhood and how their parents were in 2 sentences. 1 sentence stating what they were allowed to do and 1 sentence for what they were not allowed to do. Then they are going to go pairs and talk to their partners about their childhood. Finally, the teacher will ask the students to say to say their sentences about their childhood.
