Description

In this lesson, students will learn new vocabulary through A Christmas Carol by Charles dickens. The class begins with a discussion about favorite festivals, followed by an introduction to the story and key vocabulary using pictures. Students will read a passage, answer comprehension questions, and participate in a group activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show pictures of different festivals. Have students discuss in pairs which festival they like more and why. Invite few pairs to share their answers with class to activate prior knowledge and set a festival tone.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Introduce A Christmas Carol. Present key vocabulary with visuals and ask students about their familiarity with the story to activate prior knowledge.

Highlighting (5-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Write key vocabulary( e.g., chain, eternity, miserable) on the board. Explain each word with visuals and examples, then have students repeat and use them in simple sentences.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Students read a passage from A Christmas Carol that includes key vocabulary. Then, guide a discussion to clarify main ideas and themes, asking comprehension questions to ensure understanding.

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will match names to descriptions and pictures to letters, followed by answering comprehension questions about the reading passage to reinforce understanding.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

In pairs, students discuss two questions related to the passage and share their ideas using key vocabulary. A few pairs will then share their answers with the class.

Free Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Divide the class in to two groups: the "poor" group lists their Christmas wishes, and the "rich" group lists gifts they they will buy for the poor. Finally, groups will compare their lists to discuss generosity.
