In this lesson, the students are going to learn and practice the present perfect tense, following Text-based presentation, PPP, and Guided Discovery They will also practice some vocabulary related to countries and flags.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of present perfect tense in the context of travelling to different countries and life experiences

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of verbs in the past participle form in the context of life experiences
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of life experiences and travelling
  • To differentiate the present perfect tense from the simple past tense

Procedure

Lead In (5-7 minutes) • To elicit the students' knowledge about countries

T. shows ss a flag of a country and asks them to guess it. Next T. asks ss to match the flags to the countries.

orientation to the text (5-7 minutes) • To get ss to infer the form of the present perfect tense through listening to a number of sentences

T. demonstrates that ss are going to read and listen to five sentences on the student book page (106). Then, they will repeat the sentences. After the ss listen, they are required to work in groups and tell each other which countries they have been/ haven't been to.

Focus on language from the text (5-7 minutes) • To get ss to infer and detect the form of 'have been' to talk about previous travelling to places

In this stage, T. focuses on language from the text and clarifies and checks meaning, form and pronunciation of target language presented in the text. T. directs ss to underline ' have been to' T. highlights that 'have been' to is used to talk about a previous visit or travelling to somewhere.

Controlled Practice (7-10 minutes) • To practice ' have been' to talk about previous visits/ travelling experience to different places

In this stage, T. directs ss to listen to exercise no. 2 page 106. Students are required to practice the sentences by reading them first to each other, the changing the names of countries and cities that have been mentioned. Next, students can talk about one another or members of their families using ' has been to'. T. gives feedback for the students' use of the target rules. .

Free practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide free practice on 'have been' and 'has been to' to in positive and negative forms.

In this stage, T. asks ss to think of different places they have been to. They can work in pairs. Later, they are required to talk about one another using the verbs.
