TP7 Writing
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, I will be working with the same level of learners that have been introduced to basic functions and topics of previous lessons. Students have a range of understanding, though some students require more work than others. Proper CCQ's and verification of understanding is important for students to understand instructions and activities.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide process writing practice of a Recommendation in the context of movies. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to write a structured and coherent film review using appropriate language, including descriptive adjectives, formal structures, and expressions for evaluating films.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for giving recommendations in the context of movies. Students will have developed their ability to use formal register and cohesive devices in writing, and will have practiced reading and analyzing a model text for layout and key phrases.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask students to discuss in pairs what their favorite film is and why. Elicit a few responses. Briefly introduce the concept of writing a film review and its purpose (e.g., to inform and provide an opinion).

Model Analysis (6-7 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Show a model film review on Google Forms (Toy Story). Students read for gist and answer a quick question: “What is the overall review of the movie, good or bad?” Detailed: Discuss the structure: Introduction (film title, main characters), Summary, Evaluation, and Conclusion.

MPA (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Aim: To focus on useful formal phrases and cohesive devices. Procedure: Highlight key phrases in the model text (e.g., The film is set in..., I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys..., etc. ). Elicit other phrases students might use and review on google slides.

Productive Task(s) (15-18 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Aim: To have students write a structured film review. Procedure: Give students a template for a film review with guides in the slides for each section (Introduction, Summary, Evaluation, Conclusion). Ask students to choose a film they have seen recently and write a review in 15 minutes, using the model text and phrases on the board. Monitor and assist as needed using notes section in Google Slides

Feedback and Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Do corrections during the 15 minute window for the students to constantly improve their work, and then allow confused students the guidance on their own slides.
