Speaking about fairy tales

Description

In this lesson students will speak about fairy tales and hidden meaning of symbols used in those stories.

Materials

Abc Handouts with symbols connected to Turkey

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy in speaking lesson in the context of fairy tales and symbols

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide claryfication of useful language (expressing formal and informal ways of argreeing and disagreeing in the context of symbolism in fairy tales)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher is talking about previous lesson that If we had genie in a bottle we would change everything:) T will elicit word fairy tell and ask students if they know any fairy tales. Teacher will show pictures one by one of 3 fairy tells characters snow white. cinderella, and beauty and the beast. Teacher will ask students if they know those fairy tales and if you can discuss about in in pairs. For each pair or group give one fairy tale to talk about.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Teacher will start talking about fairy tales if they are just for children. Teacher will say that when we look into fairy tales carefully we might find symbols. What is symbol? What does it mean? Teacher will give reading about symbols in fairy tales.(2minutes) After reading teacher will ask to discuss in pairs about different symbols in those 3 fairy tales. Anticipated Problem: Students might not now the symbols. Teacher if necessary will use pictures to guide students. Teacher will put on board pictures with symbols ( Snow white, Apple, mirror, Evil Queen)- eliciting words innocency,poisoned,vanity, evil). Cinderella( stepmother,-orphan, lost shoe-dremas, prince-happyness), Beauty and the beast ( beauty, rose, beast).

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Before this teacher will present useful language for discussion. İt will be handouts for formal and informal agreement/disagreement. Teacher will ask student to highlight informal ones. Teacher will ask students to chose /agreement /disagreement /polite /less polite) Teacher will drill some of examples.

Productive Task(s) semi controlled practise (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I).Teacher will ask students to try to guess what its hidden meaning in different symbols of the fairy tales.(cottage,evil queen,king and queen,clock,family) Teacher will give one symbol and they will have discuss in pairs and they will have to Disagree. Students discuss in pairs about symbols. then they change places and discuss with different partners. II).Teacher will ask students to discuss in pairs( or groups-depending on how many people will show up) if they remember favourite fairy tale from their childhood? Can you find any symbols and what the mean? What was the message of those stories? III) Teacher will give handouts with pictures connected to Turkey (mosque, Galata tower,maiden's tower, Bosphorus bridge,Tea,tulip).Teacher will ask students to create own story with using at least 3 symbols from handout. Students will work in pairs or groups ( depends on how many people will come). Teacher will listen to discussion discreetly and do error correction. As a feedback teacher will ask what your story was about? Optional: Dictando about The princess and the Sultan. Teacher will dictate sentences about the fairy tale .Teacher will ask students to fill in the missing part of the story.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Teacher will do delayed error correction after semi controlled and freer practise.
