Big Numbers
A1 level

Description

In this lesson the students will learn about big numbers. As previously they have learned saying the numbers they will additionaly learn how to say big numbers. The teacher will start to ask some question about İstanbul,Turkey such as "how many people live in İstanbul" or "how many people live in Turkey" to get the sts involved. After practising the big numbers the teacher will elicit some words related to the reading activity.

Procedure

Lead in for Numbers (2-5 minutes) • To involve the sts about saying big numbers and elicit the big numbers and

The teacher will randomly ask some questions to check their background about the numbers. As a lead in activity the teacher will ask some predictable questions about numbers in order to involve sts. These are some of the questions that will teacher raise : How many cities are there in Turkey ? How many people live in Istanbul ? How many people live in Turkey? How many districts are there in Istanbul ?

Saying Big Numbers (5-7 minutes) • To practice and review saying big numbers

The teacher will show the numbers and ask the sts to say the numbers. The teacher will drill and do the pronounce while they are reading.

Drilling Numbers (5-7 minutes) • To practice and review saying big numbers

The teacher will stick a paper on board where the number is written in a big font. And step by step the teacher will cover the paper and ask the sts to say the number what they see. As the sts manage to read the number the teachers will uncover the bigger numbers and ask sts to say the numbers.

Matching big numbers to the words (4-6 minutes) • To practice saying big numbers

The teacher will ask the sts to match the numbers to the words written on their worksheet.The first example will be done and shown by the teacher. The sts are supposed to work in pairs. Before getting FB the teacher will ask sts to compare their answers.

Writing and saying big numbers (4-7 minutes) • To practice and review saying big numbers

The teacher will ask the sts to write five big numbers on a piece of paper. Then the teacher will ask the sts to interchange their papers and try to say their partner's numbers. They are supposed to write the numbers individually but they will work together to say the numbers. The teacher will be monitoring and checking their understanding.

Matching the words to the pictures (5-10 minutes) • To practice the theme "festivals" and review big numbers

The teacher will give a worksheet and ask the sts not to look at the paper. The teacher will write the word "festivals" on WB and ask to sts to discuss which festival do they have in Turkey.The sts will work in small groups and try to guess the name of the festivals.Eliciting the name of the festivals the teacher will ask the sts to look at their paper and match the names of the festivals with the pictures.

Semi-authentic reading text (5-7 minutes) • To check their understanding about vocabulary and saying big numbers.

The teacher will give an adopted reading text and ask the sts to scan and try to answer the questions. The sts are supposed to work in pairs and answer the questions.
