Description

In this lesson, students will learn how to ask with how often in the simple present tense and answer using time expressions like once and twice in the context of habits and daily routines. The lesson starts with some pictures to introduce the topic. After introducing the topic, there will be controlled practice followed by a freer one.

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to ask questions using how often and also produce sentences using words of time expression in the context of personal daily routine.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practise writing a composition using words of time expression in the context of daily routine.

Procedure

Warmer (10-12 minutes) • To set the lesson context and get the students interested in the topic.

I will show the students a calender and elicit the following words "day- week- year".These words will be written on the board. I will then tell them about my daily routine trying to elicit the following words "breakfast- lunch- dinner- meal". These words will be written on the board. This will be followed by the following questions : "How many meals are there in a day?" "How many times do we have breakfast?" The following time expression words will be elicited "once", "twice" , "three times". These words will be put on the board and drilled. Then, they will be asked the following question ,in order to elicit the word "never", "Do you drink alcohol in Ramadan?".

Presenting the TL (6-8 minutes) • To introduce the target language in the context of general situations

I will show the students the following three sentences: "I go on holiday once a year." , "I sleep everyday." and "I never smoke.". Then, I will ask the the following questions: "How often do I go on holiday?", "How often do I sleep?" and "How often do I smoke?". In this way, I present the TL in an indirect way and I let them practise sentences including words of time expression naturally. Then, I will put the answers on the board and drill the sentences in different ways and focusing on the interaction between words.

Presenting questions with how often (6-8 minutes) • To practise questions with how often in the context of daily routine

I will write the following words on the board: "How often", "smoke", "you" and "do". Then I will show them the following sentence: "I never smoke." and ask them to ask me a question using the words on the board. Then, I will show them the following two sentences: "I have breakfast everyday" and "I go on holiday once a year." and ask them to ask me questions about these two sentences. Then, I will drill these sentences using my fingers to focus the students' attention on the word order of the questions. In this way, I let my students practise asking questions with how often

Controlled practice (3-4 minutes) • To practise asking questions using how often in the context of some general situations.

Students will be asked to read the sentences in the handout and make a questions using how often. I will also demonstrate an example and set time for the activity. Students will be asked to work in pairs in this activity and feedback will be handed in when the finish. During the activity, I will monitor my students to help them when needed and to make sure that they are on task.

Controlled practice 2 (5-6 minutes) • To practise both asking questions with how often and producing sentences using words of time expression in the context of daily conversations.

Students will be divided in to As and Bs. Each will be given a table about three characters routine with some gaps to fill in and Bs will be given the same table with different gaps to fill in. As and Bs will be asked to ask each other questions to fill in the gaps. Clear and simple instructions will be given and an example will be demonstrated before giving the students the handout. I will monitor the students and write down some notes to be discussed when they finish. When the students finish, they will be asked to check their answers with their partners.

free practice (3-4 minutes) • To practise producing sentences using words of time expression in the context of answering some questions.

Students will be asked to answer a set of questions using words of time expressions. Before giving them the handout, clear instructions will be given to them. I will also demonstrate an example and set time for the activity. Students will be asked to work in groups in this activity and feedback will be handed in when the finish. During the activity, I will monitor my students to help them when needed and to make sure that they are on task.

Writing practice (8-10 minutes) • To practise writing short sentences using words of time expression in the context of daily routine

Students will be given some pictures of actions and will be asked to write sentences about themselves using these pictures. They will also be asked to write about their family members. Students will be asked to work in groups of three in order to support each other. Clear instructions will be given to them. I will monitor the students and help the students when needed. When the students finish, the will be asked to go round the class and check the answers of the other groups. Some mistakes regarding using words of time expression will be discussed.
