Funtional language - Advantages and disadvantages

Description

In this lesson, the TL is the funtional language of advantages and disadvantages and it will be presented through a listening. The Ss will have a controlled practice and then a semi controlled task, where they will have a debate in which they will need to use the TL.

Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a advantages and disadvantages functional language

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The T will set the context of the lesson by asking the students what do they think about confidentiality? And ask them to do a brainstorm on the board about what they think it should be confidential. There will be a quick feedback about it.

Listening (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

The T will introduce the listening by telling them that they are about to listen to a conversation about cameras. The T will tell them to listen to the conversation and answer these questions: What do they want to do? Who thinks is a good idea and who thinks is a bad idea? ICQs Play the listening Peer checking and then WC FB.

Clarification activity to Introduce the TL (9-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the TL

The T will give them HO-TL and ask them to do their best, first on their own and then peer checking. The FB will be in the WB. There will be three columns on the WB one for positive, one for negative and another one for both kinds of sentences. So after they finish, one person of each pair have to go to the board and write the words in the right column. If they are unsure, the T will clarify the words. If not, after the FB on the WB, the T will do CCQs and clarify the collocations, part of speech, register and the differences between them. She will also do ECDWS.

Controlled Practice of the TL (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The T will give the instructions and ICQs. Then, she will give them HO-Cpractice with exercise 3. The Ss will have 3 minutes to complete the task. Then, peer checking and the WC FB will be with each S saying one of the answers, if there are seven or less Ss. If there are more than seven, one side of the room will give answers A and the other group will give answers B.

Debate (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the TL

The Ss will be divided in two groups one group have to think about the advantages and the other group about the disadvantages. The T will give the Ss HO-Debate and gave them 3 min to think about their arguments. The topic will be the same: Learning English in Istanbul After that, they will be pair up according to a number assigned by the T. And they will have 5 min to debate and come to an agreement.

Delayed error correction (3-4 minutes) • To provide clarification and error correction

During the debate the T will monitor and take notes of the mistakes and also of the good phrases she hears. After the activity the T will do a error focused FB on the WB with at least four sentences, three mistakes and one good one. In case there is still time the T will do a couple more sentences. For this activity the T will write the sentences on the board and ask the Ss to give the correct answer on the WB.

Extra activity (7-8 minutes) • To further practice of the TL in a freer task

There will be several topics on the walls of the classroom. And the Ss will stand one in front of the other in front of the papers and debate the topic of the paper for 1 min, then they will move one paper to the right, and debate for one minute. The topics are: Watching TV Social media Living in a big city Being married

Extra activity (5-6 minutes) • To practice the TL in a semi-controlled practice

The T will give the instructions and then the HO-Game. In pairs they will play for 4 or 5 min. The game is very simple, they have to say a con and a pro for each scenario, if they say them without hesitasition or they will move on LOOK FOR THE İNSTRUCTIONS ON THE PAPER WC FB
