Procedure (35-45 minutes)
Teacher shows students a picture. Students are asked to describe what they see in this picture: a man, he is running, there are clocks around. Why is he running? Who has ever run to school/work? Who is always in a hurry and needs to get everywhere fast?
1. Teacher gives the instructions to read a text 'We're living faster' quickly and answer the questions: Is it optimistic or pessimistic? Why? 2. Students read individually. Teacher discusses the question with the class and elicit that the article is pessimistic. Living faster doesn't mean living better.
1. Teacher divides students into pairs (A and B) and gives the instructions to read the rest of the article where they can find examples of how our lives are getting faster. Person A reads paragraphs 1-3, B reads 4-6 (jigsaw reading). Person A retells paragraphs 1-3, B retells 4-6 with the text covered. They should use the pictures and headlines written on the board to help them. Teacher checks answers by asking: Are any of these things true in Russia? Which?
Students are asked to swap their cards and give the second part of the text to the partner to read. In pairs, they should look at the highlighted expressions with the word time and match these expressions with definitions. Teacher checks answers, drills pronunciation if necessary.
Teacher gives instuctions to look at the questionnaire. Students listen to 4 people, answering the first question and try to guess which activity they are talking about. Students tick the answers, compare with their partners. Teacher checks answers. Students interview each other using the questionnaire. Teacher monitors and gets feedback.
