Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of past simple in the context of holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of holiday

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start the class by talking about the way I spent the last weekend.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask my students to talk about the way they spent their last weekend and the things that happened to them.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write some of my students' sentences in the correct past simple form on the board.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will draw a timeline on the board and ask some CCQs from my students to clarify the meaning of the TL which is to use this tense to talk about completed actions in the past. (CCQs: Is the sentence about the past, present or future? past. Is the action completed/finished or is still happening? It's completed. Can I mention the exact time that it happened? Yes.) I will clarify the form by eliciting the structure of the sentences(the roll of the words) from the students. The correct pronunciation of the verbs read, said and the ending sound (/d/, /t/, /id/) will be mentioned.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students are going to do exercise 1a on page 121 in the grammar bank individually in 4 minutes. They are given 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then the answers will be checked with the whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I will ask my students to talk to each other in groups of four about the things they did yesterday.

Free Practice (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students are going to write a short text (100 words) about their best holiday ever. They are given 10 minutes to do the task. They have 4 minutes to exchange their piece of writing with a partner and then the papers will be collected in.
